Halswell school ahead of schedule A NEW school in Halswell is set to open three years ahead of schedule due to rapid growth in the area. Education Minister Nikki Kaye said the $11 million Halswell West Primary School would open in 2019, with construction beginning early next year. Halswell West Primary School will be situated on the corner of Richmond Ave and Killarney Ave, near the new residential subdivision of Knights Stream Park, between Prebbleton and Oaklands. “The Halswell area is experiencing rapid growth, and we’ve responded to that by bringing forward the planned date for Halswell West Primary School to ensure children will be able to attend a local school,” Ms Kaye said. The new school, which is part

of the Christchurch School Rebuild programme, was originally scheduled to open in 2022. It will cater for children from years 1 to 8 and will initially have space for 450 students, with the capacity to expand up to 700. “There will be multiple stages to the build, with the second stage beginning when roll projections show that more spaces are required,” Ms Kaye said. As part of the Christchurch School Rebuild programme, 11 schools have been completed, 27 are under construction and 19 will start construction this year. The funding for Halswell West Primary School comes from the $1.137 billion allocated to the Christchurch School Rebuild programme, which aims to rebuild or renew 115 schools by 2022.

Inside

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK A NEW chapter so to speak in the history of the Bishopdale Library and Community Centre with the opening of new premises on Saturday. The old library was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. But the wait is over. Reporter Julia Evans and photographer Martin Hunter headed down yesterday and found a familiar face browsing through the shelves – former All Black hooker Peter Sloane. The complex is called Ōrauwhata, which means the place of the multitude of eels. You’ll have to read our story on page 4 to find out why and Peter Sloane has his smiling face on page 1. Good news for young families in Halswell – your new school is three years ahead of schedule and will open in 2019. See page 1. - Barry Clarke

PERFORMANCE: Kapa haka groups from Breens Intermediate and Isleworth School took to the stage.

Library gets grand opening By Julia Evans THE WAIT is over. With the old Bishopdale Library closing almost six years ago, Ōrauwhata: Bishopdale Library and Community Centre was opened to the community on Saturday. The ribbon-cutting ceremony included speeches from city councillor Jamie Gough, Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman David Cartwright and former chairwoman Val Carter. Kapa haka groups from Isleworth School and Breens Intermediate also performed. “The loss of the old Bishop-

dale Community Centre and Library was a huge blow to the community,’’ Cr Gough said. But he said the new building would become a focal point of the regenerating area. The $4.1 million city council asset was built on the site of the former Bishopdale Creche in the Bishopdale Village Mall, adjacent to where the old library was recently demolished. “The library and community centre had been an important part of the Bishopdale community since 1976, and we quickly set about establishing a temporary library in Bishopdale Mall, and finding the perfect

location for a new facility,” city council head of libraries and information Carolyn Robertson said. Ms Robertson said it was the city council’s chance to create a purpose-built facility that met all of the community’s modern needs. Ngai Tuahuriri Runanga gifted the name Ōrauwhata, which means “the place of the multitude of eels”. It reflects the area before it was planted and developed by the Bishop family in the 19th century, when it had eels in the water basins formed during flooding.

Visitors have more to do at Riccarton House and Bush Riccarton House and Bush visitor experience co-ordinator Antonia Allison writes about a new short film on display at the house Good news, Riccarton House is now open during the farmers’ market on Saturdays. House tours, coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be available in the warmth of the house and out of the cold. HAU, a short film by artist and director Kate Belton, is now displayed in the house. With evocative music, HAU is a gentle meditation on our sense of belonging. Free to view, a written interpretation is available as a hand-out. Recent repairs in the house have resulted in two newly tiled and vastly improved fireplaces in the entrance hall and restaurant, further adding to the inviting warmth of Riccarton House. Outside, Riccarton Bush is also having its interpretation panels

either updated or replaced. At this stage, surveys are going out to user groups, such as local schools and nature groups among others, for research feedback. The final report will then be written up for the trust board to review. In the Riccarton House gardens, a memorial cork oak was recently planted by Manson family descendants, to replace an unhealthy specimen and to celebrate ancestors Samuel and

Jean Manson and their family arriving on the Canterbury Plains (with William Deans) in 1843. Mr Manson made Canterbury history by building Riccarton Cottage, now the oldest building on the Canterbury Plains, and Mrs Manson by giving birth to the first European baby born on the plains in 1844. After the fanfare of Scottish bagpipes and speeches, the Manson descendants retired to Riccarton House for coffee and cake where an offer of a house tour was taken up by a large number of family members. •The house and cafe are open from 9am-4pm, Sunday to Friday. Daily house tours start at 2pm and run for an hour with 30min house tours starting at 10am, 11am and noon on Saturdays.

It’s not rocket science, they should be made to pay then they will choose better designs. Readers comment on the future of Yaldhurst Memorial Hall which remains in limbo Bonnie Miller Perry – This looks like a replay of the Cromwell Memorial Hall saga. Avonhead diva goes Whoopi for musical

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TAKING ON the role of the one and only ‘Lady Fabulous’, Deloris Van Cartier, could just be what Monique Clementson was born to do. Straight out of the city’s performing arts school and already Clementson, 21, has been chosen to play the lead role in the musical Sister Act in both Invercargill and Christchurch. She was head-hunted for the role and, on the same day the Avonhead resident auditioned for Invercargill Musical Theatre’s version of the show, she got a call to go audition for Showbiz Christchurch, which will stage the show in September. Having grown up watching Whoopi Goldberg in the 1992 film on which the musical is based, Clementson’s first big role out of the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art is a dream come true. “I am so incredibly grateful . . . it was just such a blessing to have the opportunity to even audition for the role,” she said. Describing her character as “sassy”, “straight-up” and “spontaneous”, Clementson said she has a connection with Deloris Van Cartier’s love of performing. Like her character, Clementson

DIVA WITH A FEVER: Monique Clementson performing in the Invercargill Musical Theatre’s version of Sister Act.

is also a fan of the nightlife, saying there is nothing like Mama Hooch on a Friday night. “That is my favourite thing to do in the weekend, to go out and pretend I am the best dancer there,” she said. While she describes her danc-

ing as “gamy”, she thinks it will work for her role. The past year has already been a whirl-wind for Clementson, who has also secured two professional gigs with The Court Theatre in its production of Legally Blonde and the children’s show

Cinderella in Space. Having a passion to make people laugh, she has even been made an apprentice Court Jester – the team behind the country’s longest running comedy show Scared Scriptless. “If someone was, like, what is

your dream goal? I would full-on say, I would love to have my own television show like Ellen or The Oprah Winfrey Show . . . and just give away heaps of stuff,” she said. Yet like a lot of artists in the city under pressure to find full-time work, Clementson has had times when she worried she made the wrong decision to study performing arts. “Between the time of finishing Legally Blonde and before I did a kids show . . . I had nothing and I was freaking out thinking I made the wrong decision,” she said. But Clementson said she opted to study at NASDA because she had never been particularly good at anything else. While studying, she was presented with a number of “serious” stage roles which she said were a huge challenge and developed her as a person. “All the things I went through during studying like relationships and break-ups and all that gross stuff helped,” she said. •Sister Act will run at the Isaac Theatre Royal from September 8-23. NO SLEEP: A group of 150 teens played laser tag, bounced on trampolines, went swimming and rock climbing all throughout the night. PHOTOS: AARON CAMPBELL

Teens long night of fun By Julia Evans ONE HUNDRED and fifty teenagers recently did what teenagers do best – stay up all night. From 8am to 8pm on July 7 and 8, teens congregated in Papanui and took part in a variety of different activities throughout the entire night. The 150 young people were

joined by 40 youth leaders and city council staff while they went to the mega air trampoline arena, Graham Condon Sport and Recreation Centre, played laser tag, went rock climbing and watched movies. The Northwest Youth Collective’s Dusk to Dawn event was supported by the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood and Papanui-Innes community

boards. Papanui-Innes Community Board chairwoman Ali Jones said there were some particularly exhausted young people by the morning. “To all the council staff who put their hand up to help out at some stage throughout the night and early hours of the morning, it is much appreciated. This could not happen without you,” said Ms Jones.

$5000 raised for Aviva A GROUP of Riccarton business women raised more than $5000 for family violence support group Aviva. The Riccarton Venus Businesswomen’s Networking Group held a fundraiser on July 2 with the proceeds going directly to Aviva families. “It’s amazing to see what you can achieve when you have businesswomen supporting and encouraging each other and creating these kinds of collaborations, and a perfect fit in giving back to the community,” regional South Island Venus manager Maree Bryant said. The group fundraised by selling Safelets, a bracelet

designed to help vulnerable people feel safe. Safelet has just been launched in New Zealand by Sharron Jones. After an accident while living alone, she searched for a personal safety option for herself and on discovering Safelet wanted to share the benefits of the product with the rest of New Zealand. Safelet is an “on the go” personal safety alarm bracelet that allows the wearer to be connected and protected by friends and family. With the push of a button they can alert their guardians and emergency services to their whereabouts and that they need

help. When the lucky winner of a Safelet, Diane Moore decided to regift it back to Aviva it really was a celebration of women wanting to give back. Aviva helps individuals and families to become – and stay – free of violence. They work with children, women, and men, giving each person the support they need, when they need it, to become safe and live free of the effects of family and sexual violence. Aviva Families is delighted to receive the support to be able to offer their vulnerable families this additional tool to help keep them safe.

By Andrew King A 39-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded on bail after he was charged for a spate of alleged arsons that struck fear into residents in the Burnside and Ilam areas. Police arrested Michael Edward Brittenden late on Wednesday and charged him with seven counts of arson relating to wheelie bin fires dating back to May. He was also charged with possession of ammunition for an unlawful purpose and possession of cannabis. Judge Jane Farish remanded him on bail on Thursday when he appeared in the district court, under strict conditions to reappear on August 3. Brittenden had been

apprehended by a police patrol at the weekend after

a wheelie bin was allegedly set alight near the intersection of Memorial Ave and Greers Rd, and charged with one count of arson. Detectives had been making further inquiries, which led to further charges. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner said it was possible more charges will be laid. More than 10 wheelie bins were set on fire, with some that were close to houses causing damage to the dwellings.

A stampeding elephant storms through the muddy waters near the Heathcote River. PHOTOS: SARAH WEBBER PHOTOGRAPHY

Wild side of the Heathcote THE FLOOD waters in Christchurch didn’t quite reach biblical proportions but one photographer has managed to spread a bit of chuckle through her imaginative photographs. A stampeding elephant, churning up water as it heads for safety, a bear clutching a fish in its mouth and an orca leaping through the streets of Beckenham are part of an apparent exodus of animals from the suburb. Even old Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, the legendary water

creature from Scotland, makes an appearance. Sarah Webber, the photographer behind the shots, said she was stuck inside during the floods and wanted to do something creative and a bit tongue-in-cheek. She started with Nessie and posted it on Facebook. The photo was such a hit that she started getting requests for particular animals. “I was just rushing to get them done – it is not even good photoshopping,” she said.

Lindisfarne opened in 1987 with the aim of providing parents and families with a nursery school which respects their individual needs and aspirations. We provide full time, part time and casual enrolment opportunities for your child, so that you can organise a schedule which suits your requirements. We are proud of our multi-national community and the opportunities this provides for both teachers and children. Regular parent and whanau activities are organised throughout the year, and we place an emphasis on a close liaison between home and nursery school, which is vital to any child’s success and progress. We do hope you find our website helpful (www.lindisfarnenursery.school.nz) but encourage you to visit the nursery school for a full information booklet. We will be delighted to meet you and your child, and welcome you to Lindisfarne.

Incorporating

experiences, interactions and play at Marshlands Nest

Roslyn Eason, fully trained and experienced early childhood teacher, owns and operates Marshlands Nest Early Learning Centre which is an intimate centre with a maximum of 25 children. Roslyn says “Our goal is to create a setting where self-esteem, love, learning and respect for others is prominent and where every child leaves each day feeling secure and loved in their special environment. At Marshlands Nest they create a most positive environment for children so they can learn through all experiences and interactions but most importantly through play.

This have a mixed licence which means children of different ages play and interact with each other. It allows siblings to be together and gives solo children a chance to be part of a larger family. It also means children do not need to transition between rooms so can stay with the same teachers and children. Marshlands Nest does recognize the need for age specific learning and a portion of each day is spent in ‘nest times” learning with others of the same age. The team at Marshland Nest would love to have you as part of their family, please feel free to drop in or give them a call.

HEALTH & AWARENESS

Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles?

T

he team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one or both hips. Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a back muscle could also be the cause, as shown in the image. Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “I will end up in a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to

her health and wellbeing. At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles. The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the hip, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They

teach a movement sequence that stretches the hip in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. In many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some

maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery. In very few treatments the client will know if it is going to work for them or not, without financial commitment.

Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
